10:15 – 12:30 Setting the Scene: Challenges and opportunities of the digital economy for the global sustainability agenda

Synopsis: G20 leaders agreed at the Hangzhou Summit on a number of common principles on jointly promoting the digital economy as a positive force for sustainable development. The digital economy will continue to feature prominently on the G20 agenda during the German Presidency, while the evolving digital economy will directly impact on the achievement of the SDGs. How will digitalisation impact on international trade patterns? Which novel international governance systems are needed, e.g. tax regimes.
Which role plays the digital economy for initiatives like ‘One Belt, One Road’? These and other questions will be touched upon in this session to set the scene for the two day round table and to kick-start the discussions.
